Nice Guys Finish Last

A 45-7 loss to Green Bay sealed Phillips fate

Maybe it should be overly lenient guys finish last.  That was the case for Wade Phillips today as he was fired by Jerry Jones at the midway point of the season.  This is the worst the Cowboys have been since I was 12 years old.  They went 1-15 in Jimmy Johnson’s first season.  That was because they were young and building.  They were 7-9 the next season and a league power for several years.  This year 1-15 is possible, 7-9 would be borderline miraculous, but it’s because they have fallen apart.

Phillips has long been known as a players coach.  That was part of his downfall.  Two plays in back to back games stand out, well stand out more than all the other bad plays this year.  Week 5 against the Titans Jason Witten catches a touchdown pass and celebrates with Mark Colombo.  A penalty flag is thrown for excessive celebration.  Okay learn from that and move on right?  The very next week at Minnesota Roy Williams catches a touchdown pass and Miles Austin leapfrogs him.  Excessive celebration again, a penalty again.

The camera immediately panned on Phillips as it should have.  He had the same expression on his face, no anger, no irritation, not much of anything.  He should have ripped into those guys the second they got to the sideline, but he just let it go.  Now I don’t know how he is in the locker room but the play on the field is a pretty good indication.  Tom Coughlin would have cut someone right on the spot.  Accountability is always expected, Wade has always been to nice to demand it.

Agree, disagree, agree to disagree.  It doesn’t matter.  Feel free to scroll down and leave a comment.
