Five Is Enough

To much of Johnson in front during the season. . photo: allleftturns.com

I grew up an hour and a half from Bristol Motor Speedway, and I live about an hour from there now.  But I’m not a big NASCAR fan.  Calling me a casual fan would be a huge overstatement. But if you keep up with sports in general or watch any highlight shows  at all you know what’s going on as far as who won each race or who the points leader is.  Unless you live under a rock,

you know that Jimmie Johnson is the current champion.  He’s won the last 5 titles.  Like I said, I’m not even a casual fan and I’m tired of him.  I can only imagine how hardcore non Jimmie Johnson fans must feel.  Five championships in a row, when was the last time that happened in any other major sport?

It’s never been done in the NFL.  The last time it happened in the NBA the Celtics did it, they won 8 in a row from 1959-66.  If Jordan doesn’t retire, the Bulls of the 90′s probably have a good shot at it.  The Yankees won 5 straight from 1949-53.  As for the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens won 5 in a row from 1956-60.  John Wooden led UCLA to 7 consecutive titles from 1967-73.

So what I’m saying is that this hadn’t happened in a long time.  A lot has changed since then.  When the Celtics went on their run, there were only 9 teams in the league.  The 40′s and 50′s Yankees never had to worry about free agency.  There was no 3 point shot when Kareem and Bill Walton were dominating at UCLA.

If Johnson had done this 40 years ago it would have been different.  It’s hard to believe he’s doing it in this era with all the technology and competition today.  There are 42 other drivers gunning for him every week.  Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon have multiple titles themselves as well as all the other good drivers and teams out there.  To put it in perspective, he’s done something that Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. never did.  Both of those guys won 7 titles but never 5 in a row.

So I guess I’m giving Johnson credit in a roundabout way.  He’s been  the best driver, but not the most popular.  His personality is vanilla, maybe even boring.  Yet you can’t say that this title run hasn’t been impressive.  I’m just hoping somebody, anybody, can break through and knock him off this year.  I’m sure all the hardcore non Jimmie Johnson fans are too.

Agree, disagree, agree to disagree.  It doesn’t matter.  Feel free to scroll down and leave a comment.
